The Clarendon Hills Public Library was begun in
1963 by 66 patrons, eight civic groups, five merchants, and a small group of dedicated
individuals. Assets included $7,300 in cash, donated books, and a small ranch house
with a formidable mortgage. Five years later, the community approved a referendum
providing tax support for the young library, and the following year the mortgage on the
ranch house was retired. In 1971 the first full-time professional librarian was
hired, and a new library building was built next year! The building was remodeled in
1985 with a 4,000 square foot addition, and in 1998 a second remodeling allowed the
library to reallocate space, providing handicapped access to all parts of the building and
increased public area. But though the physical building has changed, the library
still depends on many dedicated volunteers to handle much of the day-to-day operation of
the facility.
The library purchases books for recreational
reading, as well as materials for children and adults researching various topics.
Trained staff assist people using library materials, and can also help patrons look beyond
the Clarendon Hills Public Library to resources available in surrounding communities, or
even further away through our membership in the Suburban Library System. Story
hours for children meet at various times during the week, and there are book discussion
groups and various types of programs for adults. The Library also has a sunny,
pleasant meeting room available for rent to non-profit organizations in the area.
